We love Hanukkah season in Israel. Happy children learn about the powerful story of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil, prepare Hanukkah crafts, sing songs and have Hanukkah parties at school and performances in community festivities. It is a lot of fun to be in Israel at Hanukkah.

But let’s be honest, it’s always wonderful to be in Israel. There are so many things that make this very spiritual place special.

We thought we would share with you some of our favorite things about Israel. We hope it will inspire you to think about all the things you love about this center of spirituality and all the wonderful ways you can show your support.

  • The country can be traveled in one day but yet passes through deserts, mountains, coastal planes, river valleys, metropolises, olive groves and farms.
  • Israeli Memorial Day is commemorated in an appropriately somber manner in which people stop and stand at attention for two minutes to honor Israel’s fallen soldiers.
  • The peacefulness of Shabbat. Once a week Israel stops and just rests without feeling guilty.
  • Nearly all the produce is local. The kibbutzim and moshavim produce amazingly tasty fruits and vegetables sold only a few kilometers from where they are grown. The produce is available only when in season and we think it should carry a sticker that says, “Made by G-d in G-d’s Land.”
  • The IDF. Enough said.
  • Israel has an extraordinary number of inventions including the SIDS baby monitor, USB flash drive, voice mail, drip irrigation, the office printer, a multitude of medical treatments and huge advancements in solar power (good luck to all those who want to boycott all things Israel!)
  • The celebration of Jewish holidays is done with such gusto! They are paid days off from work and celebrated with the abundance of joy and revelry or calm sorrow and contemplation as the case may warrant.
  • Israel is the only country in the world that began the 21st century with more trees than the century before.
  • It is the place the sky, land, sea, rain, sun, and wind described in the Psalms comes to life.
  • The family friendly culture -- no one gives you a dirty look on the train if your children are making noise and even though the country isn’t fully accessible for prams, there is always someone to help carry your pram down the stairs.
  • The spoken language is Hebrew whose words are traced as far back as the Torah.
  • Israeli taxi drivers – he will share with you his experience during the Yom Kippur War, argue with his wife on speaker phone, give his opinion about the upcoming election (and try to persuade you to it) and then bless you to find happiness all in the course of one taxi ride.
  • Falafel, humus, schwarma, schnitzel, couscous, challah, jachnun, shakshooka – one word - YUM!!!
  • And the preeminent reason we love Israel, “It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.” Deuteronomy 11:12
