Banias
Banias (Caesarea Philippi)
Fly over the beautiful area of the northern Golan Heights. The Banias features a striking waterfall and archaeological ruins of the uninhabited Biblical city of Caesarea Philippi. Caesarea Philippi is mentioned several times in the New Testament Gospels. The city is mentioned in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Just outside Caesarea Philippi Jesus asked his closest disciples what they thought of him. Their answers included the Confession of Peter in which he emphatically acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah. In turn Jesus made Peter the Rock on which to build His church.
Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" Mark 8:27
It was here that Jesus, recognized as the Messiah by Peter said "You are Peter, the rock, and on this rock I will build my Church" Matthew 16:16-18
