Yom HaAtzmaut

Israel Independence Day is celebrated on the 5th of the Hebrew Month of Iyar (usually Mid-May).  This was the day that David Ben Gurion declared the State of Israel (see historical video footage).

Israel Independence Day follows right after Yom Hazikaron (Remberance Day for Fallen Soldiers) which brings the citizens from emotions of sadness to joy.

It is a national holiday so everyone is on vacation.  The day is opened with an official ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and smaller community celebrations around the country.  The day is spent hiking The Land and picnicing and barbequing.
