Natural Frankincense and Myrrh Biblical Incense

Frankincense, Myrrh were two of the gifts of the Magi given to the Christ child when the first met Him at his birth. The biblical Magi, or wise men, appear in Matthew 2, having traveled from “the east” in search of the newborn King of the Jews. The gold, frankincense, and myrrh were carried a great distance specifically for the new King that was to be born under the Star of Bethlehem. They had tracked the Star for up to two years.

When they made it into Jerusalem, they went right to Herod to ask where the Baby might be. Herod seems to know right away that the prophesies about the Messiah were connected, because he asked his scholars where Messiah was to be born.

According to the Gospel of Matthew (2:11). Frankincense, myrrh and gold were exceedingly valuable gifts, traditionally given to honor a king or deity in the ancient world. In fact, these same three items were apparently among the gifts, recorded in ancient inscriptions, that King Seleucus II Callinicus offered to the god Apollo at the temple in Miletus in 243 B.C.E. The Book of Isaiah, when describing Jerusalem’s glorious restoration, tells of nations and kings who will come and ‘bring gold and frankincense and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.'” (Isaiah 60:6)

Frankincense and myrrh, both of which have proven antiseptic and inflammatory properties, have a long history dating back thousands of years. They were once considered effective remedies for everything from toothaches to leprosy. There is textual and archaeological evidence that both frankincense and myrrh were used as medicine in ancient times.

Some scholars think that frankincense, myrrh and gold were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself. Gold representing his kingship, frankincense a symbol of his priestly role, and myrrh a prefiguring of his death and embalming.

“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11
