The Star of David is known in Hebrew at the Magen David (מגן דוד) – directly translated as Shield of David. It is the symbol most commonly associated with Judaism today. It is named after the revered King David and the shape of his mighty shield. This six-pointed star symbolizes that God rules over the universe and protects us from all six directions: North, South, East, West, Up and Down. It appears on the flag of the state of Israel, and is the symbol of the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross known as the Magen David Adom.
