Galilee Boat

Ancient Galilee Boat a.k.a. the Jesus Boat

The Discovery and Excavation

The Ancient Galilee Boat which is also known as "Jesus Boat" was discovered by 2 brothers, Moshe and Yuval Lufan, in the winter of 1986.

The Galilee Boat was found on the muddy shores of the Sea of Galilee near Kibbutz Ginosar when a severe drought caused the sea to recede.
The boat was buried in mud and thus was protected by the seabed sediments.
The Israeli Antiquities Authority - along with members of Ginosar and many other volunteers - took part in the Archeological dig and rescued the boat in a remarkable 12 day Excavation.

The Recovery and Conservation of the boat

The excavators wrapped the weak and waterlogged hull in a cocoon of fiberglass and Polyurethane foam and then successfully floated it to the nearby Yigal Alon Center on Kibbutz Ginosar. There it underwent an extensive 11 years of conservation process in a specially built pool.
In the last stage of conservation process the boat was covered by synthetic wax in order to replace the water in the wood cells. The hull was then allowed to dry slowly and cleaned of excess wax

Date and Details of the boat

The Galilee Boat was conclusively dated to first century A.D. – The time of Jesus and the great revolt of Jews against the Romans.
It is made of 12 different types of woods and is 9 meters long, 2.5 meters wide and 1.25 meters high. It may have functioned as a ferry boat, but its measurement also suits those used by ancient fishermen.

In February of 2000, 14 years after its excavation, the boat moved to its permanent home in the new wing of The Yigal Alon Center on Kibbutz Ginosar.
